Inquiry launched into Belgian boy aboard flight to Spain

An investigation has been launched into how a twelve-year-old Belgian boy boarded a flight from Brussels to Spain alone.

The child was said to have passed security without a boarding pass or ID. His parents reported him missing on Thursday, but it wasn't until Saturday that he was found by a police officer at Malaga airport.

Questions are now being asked of Brussels airport and the airline Jet Air about failures in security checks. The airline and airport security services are studying CCTV footage to find out how he managed to board the Jet Air flight.

The reasons why the boy took the flight remain unclear. According to his mother, the boy ran away after a dispute with one of his teachers.

Costa maintains visitor numbers but loses revenues
Foreigners save tourism year as domestic arrivals tumble

arrivals were up 3.1 per cent to 5.5 million

MÁLAGA province attracted the same number of tourists last year as in 2011, but they stayed less time and spent less money, according to figures presented by the Costa del Sol Tourism Board last week.

Málaga welcomed 9.15 million tourists last year, up a slight 0.1 per cent from 2011, but brought in three per cent less revenue, at 6.52 billion euros (down 200 million from the previous year).

In terms of visitor numbers, a solid increase in foreign arrivals made up for a decline in domestic tourists. The province was visited by 5.5 million foreign travellers, up 3.1 per cent compared to 2011. In contrast, the number of Spanish tourists fell by four per cent, to 3.6 million.

Domestic tourists not only arrived in smaller numbers but also spent less, with an average trip budget of 524 euros, compared to 572 euros in 2011. Overall they spent 1.89 billion euros in 2012, down from 2.17 billion euros the year before. Foreign tourists spent a total of 4.63 billon euros (pending final December figures), up from 4.55 billion euros en 2011.

Costa bucks trend with increase in foreign population

Costa bucks trend with increase in foreign population
National figure falls for first time since 1996 but Málaga shows rise

MÁLAGA province had a 3.1 per cent increase in foreign residents last year, despite the nationwide figure posting a decline for the first time since 1996.

Data released last week by the National Statistics Institute (INE), based on municipal ‘padrón' censuses as of January 1, 2012, show that in Málaga province there were 292,257 foreigners, up from 283,498 a year earlier and representing 17.8 per cent of the total population.

Nationwide, the total number of resident foreigners dropped by 15,229 people, a very slight decline of 0.3 per cent but significant in that it marked the first drop since the current records began to be kept.

The Costa's bucking of the national trend may be in part due to the relatively high proportion of EU nationals, as opposed to non-EU immigrants, among the province's foreign population. The nationwide drop of 15,229 resident foreigners was the result of an exodus of non-EU immigrants, whose numbers dropped by 63,496.

Also, campaigns by Costa town halls encouraging foreign residents to register on their local padrón may have helped to boost the official foreign population as some people who were already living here became registered for the first time.

TEAM MALAGA TAKES ON THE BEST OF SPAIN!

Malaga v Spain 2012

Ten men & ten ladies representing the Spanish National squad, from mainly Alicante and Almeria provinces, will make the trek to Santa Maria Bowls Club to play a match against Team Malaga, under the auspices of the Spanish & Andalucian Bowling Federations. The result will certainly be an exhibition of excellent bowling and warm friendship between the two teams.

Last year, the highlight of the event, off the bowling green, was the visit of the Mayor of Benalmadena, accompanied by several dignitaries from the town hall. This year the Lady Mayoress of Marbella has been invited to inaugurate this annual event, “the Jewel in the Crown” of the Malaga bowling calendar.

Murray Johns, President of the host club, Santa Maria, and his enthusiastic support team, including Arthur Lees, Club Captain, have promised to make it a memorable occasion.

Brian Todd & Margaret Kain, the Team Malaga captains, have promised to field strong Men’s & Ladies teams against our welcome visitors – they need to because they will be playing against the Spanish National squad.

So Malaga bowling fans, mark the date in your diaries and come along to:

Elviria Urb., Santa Maria, N340 Km. 192, 29600, Marbella. (Refreshments available.)

Tourist's Del Sol

seen BRITISH and Russian tourists will be the main target of the ‘Tourism & Health Spain’ campaign on the Costa del Sol.
Around 30 private health clinics and hotel resorts in the area joined forces to attract potential foreign tourists who would like to add leisure and cultural activities to their stay in Malaga Province to receive health assistance.
The project will be officially launched during the Fitur international tourism trade show, to be held in Madrid from January 30 to February 3. ‘Tourism & Health Spain’ is headed by the president of the Malaga Association of Private Clinics and owner of Malaga’s Chip Hospital, Jesus Burgos. He reported that their target customer is a middle-to-upper or upper-class patient who may spend around €10,000 per year
on health services alone. Malaga Province’s private clinics estimate they will receive an annual overall turnover of €250- 300 million. And then there is the additional amount spent on leisure, maintenance and
accommodation by the patients and their families.
Currently, Malaga Province’s private health offer includes 4,500 beds, 45 per cent of the overall
availability in Andalucia, the association reported.

Malaga increase

For the first time since the crisis began, the statistics for the struggling Malaga property sector have shown some improvement. In the first nine months of this year, home sales have managed to break the negative trend of the previous four years, growing by 3.5% over the same period of 2011.

According to the Ministry of Development, a total of 12,692 homes built in the Malaga province found an owner between January and September, which was nearly a third of all the homes sold in the whole of Andalusia.

This is why, despite the current difficult situation, Malaga remains one of the provinces with most real estate activity, this year being ranked as the fourth largest, behind Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante. This is partly due to the pull of foreign demand, which accounts for a quarter of the homes sold and which is growing at a rate much higher than that of domestic demand.

Violeta Aragón, the General Secretary of the Malaga Association of Builders and Developers (ACP), welcomed this turnaround with a mixture of optimism and caution, saying “Something is moving, the proof of which is that, by our calculations, the ‘stock’ has been reduced to 15,000 homes”. Aragón said that there are two emerging trends which explain this surge in demand. On the one hand, “transactions are being brought forward, since on 1st January 2013, VAT on housing is to rise and tax allowances are to be eliminated,” she explains. This advance purchasing may be followed by a new slump next year, so builders are not confident that domestic demand will sustain a strong recovery in the sector in the short term.

In contrast, foreign demand is registering continuous growth, which the ACP is confident will be maintained or even intensify in 2013. Between January and September this year, 3,099 real estate transactions were signed in the province with non-Spanish buyers, which is 8.7% more than in the same period of 2011. These transactions were focused mainly on homes on the coast.

Emerging Markets

According to data held by the ACP, buyers from the United Kingdom still maintain the lead in foreign demand, accounting for 30% of home sales to foreigners. The Nordic countries came next, which together account for 20% of sales, then Germany with 9%. With smaller percentages, but growing, are the so-called emerging markets, particularly Russia, which already accounts for 5% of the homes sold to foreigners.

Diario Sur reported that the behaviour of the new and the second hand housing markets is also inconsistent: new home sales are still falling (by 17%), while sales of second hand homes rose by 11%, representing almost 80% of total sales.

By municipalities, sales have risen especially in Manilva (where they have doubled) and Estepona (16.4%). They have also increased, although by less, in Fuengirola, Marbella, Mijas and Torremolinos. In contrast, still in free fall are Malaga capital (with 17.4% fewer homes sold) and Vélez-Málaga.

The “What Makes You Happy?” Book Project:

You can now get involved with a fantastic new project that has the potential to reach numerous people. So many of us can tend to focus on the negative things in life and what we cannot do, not what we can do; on what we do not have, not what we do have. The: “What Makes You Happy?” Book Project is the start of something big that I want to continue and grow, so that it enriches people’s lives and touches the masses, not just a few. This is all about you and what makes you feel happy, which in turn, when others read will bring enlightenment to them and make them think about what makes them happy too. Like attracts like! Therefore positivity attracts positivity. To contribute you can post what makes you happy* (anything from one word, to a sentence up to a whole paragraph!) on here. So you could say something like: "Sunshine" or: "The sunshine makes me happy." or: "The sunshine makes me happy because I can sit around the pool and when I get too hot, I can jump in the cool water." Things along these lines... This is a very light-hearted idea – It can be more deep and thoughtful than this.

(So, there are a few choices, you can get in touch via here, email, facebook or even contact me via Twitter – You can Tweet me or Direct Message (DM) me).
